No. 2 Brock drops five set thriller versus No. 10 Western

LONDON – Playing a second match in as many nights, the No. 2 Brock Badgers women’s volleyball team fell 3-2 versus the No. 10 Western Mustangs on Saturday afternoon in London. Set scores were 23-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-22, 16-14.

The defeat marks the second five set loss for the OUA leading Badgers this season, with the previous coming just one week prior against the No. 5 McMaster Marauders. Brock’s 11-2 record places them in a four-way tie atop the provincial standings alongside Western, McMaster, and Waterloo.

Falling behind early, the Badgers were able to climb back into the contest due to a poor serving performance from the Mustangs who tallied 18 total service errors to just five for Brock through the five sets. However, the versatility of the Western attack, which saw four players reach double-digit points, proved to be too much for the visiting Badgers.

For the second straight contest second-year outside hitter Sadie Dick led the way for the Badgers offensively, notching a team-high 16.5 points from 15 kills and three block assists.

Madison Chimienti, Christina Jovetic, and Grace Pyatt added 10.5, 8.5 and 7 points for Brock.

Brock setter Sara Rohr finished the match with 35 total assists, while libero Aleiah Torres surpassed 20 digs for the fourth time this season recording 23 on Saturday afternoon.

Janelle Albert registered a career performance for the Mustangs, finishing the contest with 22 kills, three service aces, one solo block and one block assist for 26.5 total points in the victory.

The perennial powerhouse Badgers will look to bounce back on home court inside Bob Davis Gymnasium next weekend as they challenge the York Lions in back-to-back contests on Friday, Jan. 27 and Saturday, Jan. 28. The annual Bell Let’s Talk games will begin at 6 p.m. on both nights. Tickets can be purchased at brocku.universitytickets.com, with the matches also available to watch online at OUA.TV.
