TIGHT CONTEST FALLS IN LANCERS FAVOUR

The No. 6 University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team fell to the Windsor Lancers 3-2 (16-25, 25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 8-15) on Saturday, January 21 at the Toldo Lancer Centre in Windsor, Ont.

TORONTO STATS: Fourth-year left side Evan Falardeau led the Blues for the second-straight night recording a game-high 21.5 points. The political science major tallied 19 kills, one ace, one sole block and one assisted block.

Veteran outside hitter Mitchell Neuert had a season-high performance totaling 18.5 points. The fifth-year had 15 kills, three assisted blocks and two aces. Second-year outside hitter Hunter Arulpragasam also had a noteworthy night. The Abbotsford, B.C. native recorded season-highs in points (14), kills (12) and digs (5).

Rookie setter Michael Hickey recorded a career-high 48 assists in the win, beating his previous career-high in assists (41) he set the night before.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

In a near mirror image of the previous night, the Blues and Lancers played to five sets in the Rose City.

After a Lancers-dominated first set (16-25), the Blues had all the motivation they needed to sweep the next two.

A late push from the Blues in the second set saw the team from Toronto even things up. With major efforts from Falardeau and Hickey, the Blues took the second set 25-21.

The third set saw more of the same. A tied set (22-22) would ultimately go the Blues way following three consecutive kills from the Blues attack (25-22).

With the game on the line, the Lancer were able to hold off the Blues and secure the fourth set 25-23.

In the end, the game would fall in favour of the home team. With the Lancers taking the fifth set 15-12.

UP NEXT: The Blues return to action Friday, January 28 on the road vs. the Windsor Lancers. First serve is set for 8:00 p.m.
