TOVELL, TRUBYUK NAMED YORK ATHLETES OF THE WEEK FOR PERIOD ENDING JAN. 28

York University Lions men’s hockey goaltender Matt Tovell and women’s volleyball outside hitter Alisa Trubyuk have been named York athletes of the week for the period concluding Jan. 28.

Tovell, a first-year commerce major, was spectacular for the Lions in his lone game between the pipes last weekend. The Belleville, Ont., native made 39 saves on 42 shots – including several ten-bell stops – in 3-2 loss to the UQTR Patriotes on Saturday. That included a sprawling save midway through the third to keep the Lions within a goal. Saturday was Tovell’s fourth 30+ save game of his rookie campaign.

He and the Lions now prepare for a pair of games this week, first in Kingston against the Queen’s Gaels on Wednesday night. They then return home for their senior celebration night and home finale on Saturday night against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks at 7:15 pm from Canlan.

Trubyuk, a third-year psychology major, set a season high in kills with 16 in Saturday’s four-set triumph over the Trent Excalibur. The Woodbridge, Ont., native maintains her club lead in that department, and needs one more kill to break her career high of 99, set last season. She also tied a season-high with four aces on Saturday. Trubuyk was solid defensively as well, combining for 14 digs over the two matches last weekend.

Trubyuk leads the Lions into Kingston for a pair of matches with the RMC Paladins beginning Friday night at 6:00 pm.
