LIONS PREY ON PALADINS FOR THIRD STRAIGHT WIN

The York University Lions Women’s volleyball team set off to Kingston to face off against the Royal Military College (RMC) Paladins. Despite struggling earlier on in the season, the Lions were coming off of two strong wins against Trent Excalibur and were looking for a third consecutive victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Lions took a commanding start to the first set. Amarai Endes lead the Lions all over the court leading the team in kills (12), aces (4), blocks (3.0) and Digs (5). Outstanding performances accompanied by the continued momentum from the past two wins set the tone for the Lions win 25-12, getting the overall game up 1-0.
  • The second set saw a turn in events as the Paladins fought back, defending their home court. As the set continued and with some back-and-fourth from the teams, it was hard to tell which way the set would fall. Eve Smith lead the home team in kills and ultimately helped the team secure the 27-25 set for RMC, making the game 1-1.
  • In the third set, the Lions were back in their rhythm. Megan McDonald was key in ‘setting’ the Lions up for success with 31 assists in the game. Alisa Trubyuk and Brooklyn Parliament stepped up in helping the Lions with both kills and digs, respectively. The third set ended 25-15, regaining the lead for the Lions 2-1.
  • Going into the fourth set, the Lions had their eyes on the win but the Paladins were not giving up without a fight. The Lion attack had the Paladins on steady defence with Emilie Boileau of the Paladins having 12 digs in the game. Madison Shanks became a weapon of success as she had 7 kills and 4 digs of her own to ultimately set the Lions up for their third set win, 25-20 and winning the game 3-1.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Lions remain in Kingston as they gear up for a rematch against the Paladins, fueled by determination to clinch victory in the second half of the weekend. First serve flies Feb 3rd at 4:00 pm
