(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS men’s volleyball team is naming 6’6” outside hitter Kieran Brost as the first member of their 2022 recruiting class.

The 17-year-old, from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2022-2023 RSEQ season.

“Kieran is an outside hitter who has experience playing both right and left side positions,” said REDS head coach Dan McMorran. “With his size and versatility, he has the potential to be a significant player in our program in the coming years.”

Finishing his Grade 12 year at Dartmouth High School, Brost has been a member of the Spartans’ varsity team since 2019. In 2020, Brost and the Spartans won a regional championship and advanced to the provincial final before it was cancelled due to the pandemic.

He’s played on Dartmouth Volleyball Club teams since 2016, earning provincial championship gold medals at the U14 and U16 levels, both as an underage player.

Since 2018, Brost has been part of Volleyball Nova Scotia programs, helping Team NS to bronze medals at the Eastern Elite Championship events in 2018 and 2019. Brost has participated in Nova Scotia’s Provincial Excellence Program in 2018-19, 2020-21 and 2021-22, and is currently part of Nova Scotia’s Canada Games training team.

“UNB’s quality in academics and athletics interested me,” said Brost. “After experiencing the team atmosphere and seeing the training facilities, I knew it was a great fit all around.”

Coach McMorran says Brost will perform in the classroom as well as on the court.

“He’s an excellent student, so we’re excited to have an all-round student-athlete of his calibre join us next season,” he said.

Brost hopes to adapt quickly to the level of play at the U SPORTS level. Longer-term, he wants to contribute to the REDS becoming a contender for the national championship.

“I’m an adaptable player with an ability to play both right and left side,” said Brost. “I’m proud of my commitment to training and to learning about the game.”

Brost will study Business while attending UNB.
