YORK FALLS TO QUEEN’S IN FIVE-SET MARATHON

The York University Lions men’s volleyball team pushed the No. 9 nationally ranked Queen’s Gaels to the brink, but ultimately fell 3-2 against the Gaels Friday night at ARC Main Gym.

The loss resulted in the elimination of the Lions from OUA playoff contention.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Lions seized control of the first set early, leading 17-10 as they capitalized on Gaels’ slow start. However, the Gaels found their groove late in the set to put together a 7-3 run, to close in the game 21-18. The final kill by Andrew Tauhid put the Gaels away 25-20.
  • The second and third sets were a tight back-and-forth rally. Queen’s managed to grab a 14-9 lead, which they kept alive all throughout the second set to win 25-22.
  • The Lions switch things up in the third, as they battled back late in the set despite trailing for the bulk of the game, prevailing 25-21.
  • In the fourth set, the two teams continued taking turns in taking the lead. Unfortunately, the Lions were unable to gain an advantage this time, as the Gaels squared the contest with a 25-23 victory.
  • The fifth was no different to the last four sets, with a spark from both teams to win the hard-fought battle, with the Lions giving it their all to keep their season alive. The Gaels, though, showed no restraint and went on to win the game 15-11.

NOTABLE NUMBERS

  • The Lions were led by Tauhid with 25 kills, seven digs, while accumulating 30 of the 54 points. Accompanied by Jasraj Nijar with 33 assists, two aces, and four digs.
  • The Gaels were led by Erik Siksna with 24.5 points and 17 kills.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Lions will play their final game of the 2021-22 OUA campaign on Mar. 5 against the Queen’s Gaels at the ARC. The tip-off is slated for 8 pm.
