Wesmen down Dinos in opener

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women’s volleyball team came up just short on their home turf in a 3-1 loss against the Winnipeg Wesmen in the Jack Simpson Gymnasium Friday night.

In a tight matchup where both teams entered the weekend tied for third in conference standings, it was the Wesmen that came out on top after trading wins through the first two sets of play and the Dinos falling, 25-19, 25-27, 25-21, 25-17.

Leading the attack for the Dinos was Sophie Reed registering 14 kills, with Sammi Boag and Daisy Olsen adding 10 and 7, respectively.

Evelyn Kath managed both strong offensive and defensive play for Calgary, marking 24 assists and 10 digs.

Ashleigh Lauabe of Winnipeg stole the show. The fifth-year racked up 16 kills, two aces and 12 digs to lead the Wesmen to win in four.

After dropping their first set of the night, the Dinos fought back to win the second, which went point-for-point right to the end. Eventually it was a kill by Daisy Olsen giving the Dinos the edge 26-25 over Winnipeg, and an attack error by the Wesmen’s Emma Parker that levelled the match up 1-1.

The Wesmen opened the third set with a 4-0 lead and never looked back, finishing off the third 25-21.

In the fourth and final set of the evening, Winnipeg once again opened strong with a 3-0 lead over Calgary. With a swing in momentum the Dinos began to rally and were able to claw their way to trail by one, but couldn’t match the pace of the Wesmen ending the night with a final score of 25-17.

The two teams are back at it Saturday, scheduled for a 5 p.m. first serve from The Jack.
