U SPORTS Top 10 (Feb. 20, 2024): Six Gryphon Teams Featured in latest National Rankings

TORONTO, Ont. – On Tuesday, February 20, 2024, the U SPORTS office released its latest national rankings for the 2023-24 season. Six University of Guelph varsity teams were ranked, with the Gryphons women’s hockey, men’s volleyball, wrestling, and track & field teams all featured in the latest edition of the national sport rankings. 

Notes:
* Feb. 20, 2024 = final set of rankings for wrestling, volleyball, basketball, and women’s hockey
* Feb. 27, 2024 = final set of rankings for track & field and swimming
 


Gryphon Teams Ranked Nationally (Feb. 20, 2024)

Gryphons Track & Field – No. 1 & 2

The Gryphon track & field teams hold their positions within the top 2 programs in the nation after another strong weekend of competition at the Guelph Last Chance meet and U of T Hal Brown Last Chance meet. The Gryphons will now prepare for the first of their postseason competitions with the 2024 OUA Track & Field Championships taking place this weekend at the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse in Windsor. 

Gryphons Women’s Hockey – No. 3

For the University of Guelph’s women’s hockey team, who hold their position at No. 3,  this past weekend was a success despite splitting their games against the Windsor Lancers to close out the regular season. The Gryphons captured home-ice throughout the OUA playoffs thanks to a 3-1 Friday night. Now the U of G team will once again host the Lancers in game one of their best-of-three playoff series, this Wednesday evening.

Gryphons Wrestling – No. 7

The U SPORTS wrestling rankings return for the final time this season, with both the Gryphon men and women’s teams dropping places following the OUA Championships. The Gryphon women fall from No. 5 to No. 7 while the U of G men went from a tie with the Western at No. 6 to a tie with Concordia for No. 7. Next up for the Gryphon wrestling teams is the 2024 U SPORTS Wrestling Championships, which they will host on March 2 at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. 

Gryphons Men’s Volleyball – No. 10

Finally, the Gryphons men’s volleyball team stays put as the No. 10-ranked team in the nation following a dominant weekend with back-to-back wins over the TMU Bold. The Gryphons finish the season with a 15-5 record and hold 4th-place in the conference, meaning they will host the 5th-seeded Windsor Lancers this Saturday in their quarterfinal matchup of the Forsyth Cup playoffs.
