Strong start powers Dinos to sweep of UBCO

KELOWNA, B.C. – After travel issues brought on by the extreme weather across the country delayed the start of their weekend series, the Calgary Dinos men’s volleyball team was more than happy to finally take to the court Saturday with a 3-0 sweep of UBC-Okanagan from inside the UBCO Gymnasium.

Calgary came out of the gates on fire and carried that momentum throughout to snap a six-game skid, 25-18, 25-20, 25-23.

Louis Kunstmann the Dinos attack with 10 kills to go with three aces, while Zach Evans and Erik Godwin each finished with eight kills apiece.

Anders Bouck guided the Calgary offence with a season-high 29 assists in the three-set win.

Seba Manuel paced UBCO on the night with 10 kills, four digs and four blocks.

Calgary gained control of the opening set early thanks to a 4-0 run to lead 7-3. Evans got things going early and helped the Dinos pull away midway through the frame with a pair of big kills during an 8-3 run. In all, Calgary hit an impressive .550 and had just one error in the first set, while the Heat struggled with errors as the Scarlet & Gold easily won the opener, 25-18.

Despite the final score not necessarily reflecting that, the second set proved to be the closest of the night. Things were back-and-forth the whole way until a late 4-1 run by the Heat gave them a 20-18 lead after a kill by Tea Ardanaz. But the Dinos were able to flip a switch, spearheaded by Kunstmann who took control of the match, reeling off six consecutive serves to go with two of his kills, as the Dinos roared back and finished on a 7-0 run.

Kunstmann continued his strong game in the third with five kills as the two teams again traded blows early. Manuel kept things close for UBCO with four kills in the frame. With things tied late at 23-all, Calgary got a service error from the Heat before Godwin ended things with another kill to close this one out in straight sets.

The Dinos – now 6-9 on the year – will look to keep things rolling Sunday with the rescheduled final game of this weekend’s set, now scheduled for a 1 p.m. MT start against the Heat.
