Shorthanded Dinos fall to Cascades

CALGARY – The University of Fraser Cascades completed the weekend sweep with a 3-0 win over the University of Calgary Dinos women’s volleyball team Saturday evening in the Jack Simpson Gym.

The three sets varied in end scores as the teams went point for point until the last minutes, but the Cascades would come out on top, 26-24, 25-11, 25-19.

Fraser Valley now runs its win streak to six in a row, the last five of which have all been 3-0 sweeps. With Saturday’s straight sets win, 26-24, 25-11, 25-19, UFV now moves to 6-2 overall. Meanwhile, the Dinos fall to 3-5 in the early going.

Things went back and forth in the first set. An ace by Gabrielle Attieh gave the Cascades a 17-14 edge, only to see Calgary respond in a big way with a 9-2 run to go ahead 23-19. But, much like Friday’s opener, UFV was able to turn it on down the stretch to claim the opener.

Into the second set the Cascades would utilize the Dinos mistakes capitalizing on service aces and blocks. G. Attieh and Brooklyn Brodner combined for four straight kills for an early 11-5 lead before stretching things to 17-6. Brodner would come to end this set 25-11 with a kill.

It was a game of catchup in the third for Calgary. UFV started off with leads of 7-2 and 17-11, but the Dinos kept fighting to stay alive. Down 23-13, Calgary once again showed its fight, rattling off six in a row before the Cascades were finally able to close things out to claim the win.

The Dinos ended the night hitting .156 to go with six blocks, while the Cascades finished off with a .263 attack percentage and 10 blocks overall.

“I think this weekend we really had some moments where things were starting to click,” Calgary head coach Christine Biggs said. “It’s about building consistency with those pieces. This weekend has been a good demonstration for the depth of the team and building that environment where someone can come in for a point and do a good job and really help the team. Little moments like that where a small piece can make a big difference. We want to become more stable at the level were capable of and stay in that top range.”

The Dinos will remain at home next weekend as they take on their city rivals Mount Royal for a Crowchild Classic showdown at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium.

The Cascades will return home as they host the UBC Thunderbirds at the UFV Athletic Centre.
