MVB: Cougars sweep Bisons to close out first half of the season

CALGARY — The MRU men’s volleyball team went into tonight’s match-up high off a clean three set victory Friday night, and successfully carried that momentum forward. Mount Royal defeated Manitoba for the second time this weekend in straight sets, making this weekend a clean sweep for the men.

Jonah Dueck and Matthew Campbell finished with five kills for Manitoba, who fell to 4-8 with the loss.

Tonight there was a more assertive and confident Bison squad on the court, with constant pressure against the men, and forcing the team to readjust off ball positioning.

MRU took the first set 25-18, with an impressive 69.2 per cent attack average compared to the six percent they were able to hold Manitoba to.

Campbell sat at four kills after two sets for the Bisons. The team was putting up attempts but couldn’t find the floor, and had zero per cent on attack for the second, with Mount Royal bringing the score to 2-0 after taking the set 25-19.

Chris Byam and Max Haronga were strong for the Cougars side, with 14 and seven respectively.

Jackson Brennan was another one to watch for MRU, with 24 assists, two aces and five digs on the night.

The visitors had an impressive third, exchanging the lead constantly with the Cougars throughout the set. There was a new energy on the court as the crowd felt momentum shift toward Manitoba.

This momentum kept them close but the Bisons were unable to overtake the home team, with Mount Royal claiming the last set 25-21.

Both teams are now off for the winter break.
