LIONS WIN FIRST OF WEEKEND DOUBLEHEADER, DISPATCH THUNDERWOLVES IN STRAIGHT SETS

The York University Lions women’s volleyball team made quick work of the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday night at Tait McKenzie Centre. They beat the visitors from Thunder Bay in straight sets, 25-15, 25-12 and 25-16, with Alisa Trubyuk leading the team in kills (12) and assists, Amarai Endes led the team in blocks (5).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Lakehead kept the score close early, as the Lions led 14-12. The Lions then scored eight consecutive points to take a commanding 22-12 lead. Jessica Reynolds scored the set-winning kill to solidify a 25-14 first-set victory and give the Lions the lead.
  • An epic rally that lasted close to a minute highlighted the second set. It ended with a Reynolds kill which propelled York to an 11-2 lead. They eventually took the set by a score of 25-12 to go up 2-0 and put the T’Wolves on the verge of defeat.
  • Lakehead scored the first two points of the third set, but the Lions scored the next three to take the lead. Then, with the score knotted at 8-8, the Lions scored five unanswered pointsto go up 13-8. The Lions put together another run later in the set, this time a 6-0 spurt, and led 21-1. 2. The final set ended 25-16 to earn 

LOOKING AHEAD:

These two teams will do battle once again tomorrow in the back half of the weekend set. First serve flies at 6:00 pm from Tait McKenzie Centre.

PLAYOFF PICTURE:

  • With a win plus a Queen’s loss to Waterloo, York will leapfrog both the Gaels and TMU Bold and finish fifth in the conference.
  • If York and Queen’s both win, York will finish sixth. If the Lions and Gaels both lose, the Lions would finish seventh, beating out Windsor by virtue of a better record vs. common opponents.
