Heat snap Dinos win streak

KELOWNA, B.C. – Behind a remarkable second-set run, the UBC-Okanagan women’s volleyball team bounced back from a 3-1 loss to the Calgary Dinos on Friday with a 3-0 win Saturday from the UBCO Gymnasium.

The Heat claimed a pair of tight battles in both the first and third sets, sandwiching a memorable second frame that finished with a 14-0 run to earn the weekend split, 25-23, 25-11, 25-23.

Olivia Tymkiw led all players with 12 kills on the night for UBCO, also racking up seven digs on the night.

Abigail Dueck ran a clean offence for the Heat, dishing out 27 assists.

For the Dinos, Daisy Olsen turned in her third career double-double with a team-high 10 kills and 11 digs. Rookie setter Anya Fehr recorded her first collegiate double-double with 17 assists and a career-high 11 digs.

The Heat got off to a good start, thanks to a 5-0 run to go up 9-4, highlighted by a pair of kills from Natalie Funk. Calgary battled back thanks to Olsen, who fired home five kills in the set. But Tymkiw steped up late in the set for the Heat with four kills, including the set winner to take the opener

The two teams trade points through the first half of the second set before an improbable run. Tied at 11, the Heat went on a massive 14-0 run to take the second off the strength of an incredible serving performance from Tymkiw, as well as some strong blocking performances from Funk.

Calgary stormed out to a 5-1 lead early thanks to two kills from Sammi Boag. The Heat chipped away at the lead and got it evened up at 11-all before another four-point run for Calgary gave them a 15-11 advantage. The Heat responded with a 7-1 run of their own. The two teams traded mini runs before Tymkiw ended the match with her 12th kill of the contest.

The loss drops the Dinos to 7-9 on the year, while UBCO is hot on their tail after this one to move to 6-10 on the year as both teams chase after a final playoff spot. With just eight matches left to play, Calgary is off to Edmonton for a Battle of Alberta showdown next weekend while the Heat are off to Kamloops to take on TRU.
