KINGSTON, Ont. (Feb. 5, 2024) – Erik Siksna and Laura Donovan have been named the Queen’s University Varsity Sports Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances with Queen’s Men’s Volleyball and Queen’s Women’s Basketball this past weekend.
Siksna had an incredible weekend on offence for Queen’s Men’s Volleyball, helping the Gaels sweep the Nipissing Lakers on the road to improve their record to 12-4, jumping to third place in the OUA standings. In Friday’s 3-0 (29-27, 25-10, 25-17) win, Siksna finished with a game-high 11 kills, .526 hitting efficiency, three blocks, and five digs, and in Saturday’s 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 21-25, 25-18) win, Siksna had an incredible .621 hitting efficiency, recording a game-high 18 kills with no errors, while also adding three aces, two assists, and six digs.
The Gaels will host the first-place Guelph Gryphons (13-3) in a doubleheader next weekend at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC), with games scheduled for Friday, Feb. 9 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 10 at 8 p.m.
Donovan helped Queen’s Women’s Basketball sweep their weekend home series against the Laurier Golden Hawks and Waterloo Warriors. In Friday, 75-56 win over Laurier, Donovan finished with a game-high 24 points while adding seven rebounds. In Saturday’s 67-42 win over Waterloo, Donovan added 15 points for the Gaels.
With the two wins, the Gaels improved their record to 17-2 and remain in second place in the OUA East Division standings. Queen’s returns to the court next weekend, taking on the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday, Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. in Thunder Bay, Ont.
