Dinos collect road win in Regina

Regina, Sask. – The University of Calgary Dinos women’s volleyball team rebounded from a slow start on Friday night to record their second win of the season.

After a near comeback in the first set, the Dinos took the next three to win 3-1 (23-25, 25-9, 25-16, 26-24) versus the Regina Cougars at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health and Sport.

Daisy Olsen led the way for Calgary with a game-high 18 kills, while Sheridan Coninx and Dominique Desautels had seven a piece. Devyn Grimsrud fueled a balanced Regina offence with nine kills.

The Dinos found themselves trailing early on Friday with their attack out of rhythm as the Cougars went ahead by as many as eight. Carolyn Berze and Olsen helped Calgary chip away at the deficit as they evened the score at 23, but the home team grabbed the final two points of the set to stymie the comeback.

Coming off an injury in her first year as a Dino, Desautels made her Canada West debut in the second set. She posted an early kill as well as back-to-back aces as Calgary cruised to a 25-9 result in the second – hitting .391 in the process.

The Dinos took the lead in the match with a strong finish to the third set. Calgary led 16-13 before closing the set on a 10-3 run.

The fourth set went down to the wire with the Cougars looking to push the contest the distance in search of their first win of the season. With the score tied 24-24, Berze connected with a crucial shot at the back row, before a Regina attack error clinched the set and the match.

Evelyn Kath finished the evening with a career-best 35 assists.

Now 2-3 on the season, Calgary will look to get back to .500 on Saturday when they face the Cougars at 6 p.m. MT. Catch the action live on Canada West TV.
