BLUES SWEEP NO. 9 MARAUDERS IN SEASON FINALE

In their last game of the 2022-23 season, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team swept the No. 9 McMaster Marauders 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-23) on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 19) at the Goldring Centre for High-Performance.

The Blues finish their season in ninth place in the OUA with a record of 9-11. 
 
TORONTO STATS: In her last game for the Blues, fourth-year outside hitter Hope Kotun led all players with 14.5 points. The Sherwood Park, Alta. native recorded 13 kills and 18 digs in the process.
 
Rookie outside hitter Olivia Zhu scored 12 points through 11 kills and one solo block, while second-year outside hitter Asya Dogruer had 10 points through nine kills and two assisted blocks.
 
Fourth-year setter Jasmine Safar had 42 assists in the win.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues started the first set with a three-point scoring run. Despite trading points for the remainder of the set, the Blues remained comfortably in the lead. In the end, the Blues would take the first set 25-18
 
Switching the tone, the Marauders held a 20-17 lead toward the end of the second set. However, with key kills from Olivia Zhu and a strong defensive performance from Asya Dogruer and Thea Ziesmann, the Blues went on a five-point score run to take a 22-20 lead. The Blues would hold this momentum through the remainder of the set, finishing ahead 25-22.
 
In the most even of the three sets, the Blues and Marauders traded point-for-point until the Marauders struck a 17-15 lead. Through a three-point scoring run the Blues battled back to take an 18-17 lead. Tied at 23-23, the Blues would benefit from a Marauders service error and Jasmine Safar’s kill to take the third set 25-23.
