WVB: Dogs Drop Straight Sets to UBCO Heat

SASKATOON, SK – In their final game of 2022, the Saskatchewan Huskies took on the UBCO Heat in their second game of the weekend series.

After a thrilling five set win on Friday night, the Huskies were looking to continue that momentum on the court on Saturday afternoon. The UBCO Heat would prove to be too much for the Dogs, taking the game in straight sets (22-25, 13-25, 20-25).

The first set saw UBCO bring the heat going up 18-13 before the Huskies found their groove. It was Saskatchewan that would go on a rally, getting within one at 19-18 before UBCO took a timeout to slow down the Huskies offence. The timeout would be just what the Heat needed, and they would go on to win the first set 25-22.

The Heat jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead to start the second set. Saskatchewan Head Coach Mark Dodds called a time out to make adjustments trailing 16-8 to the Heat but they were unable to swing momentum their way. The Heat’s Madelyn Hettinga was a powerhouse at the net with 10 kills on the night. The Huskies would drop the second set 25-13 to UBCO and would move to a must win third set.

The Huskies looked to push their offence to the max in the third set. It was back and forth until Julia Howell Bourner found a groove at the line with two aces, supported with two huge blocks by Mandi Fraser, to give the Huskies the 15-14 lead. The Huskies couldn’t continue their offensive push and UBCO would take the third set 25-20 and take the game in straight sets.

Madelyn Hettinga and Hellen Luvizetti Lacava had 10 kills each for UBCO. For the Huskies, Rosetta Cyr had a game high 11 kills, with Annika Radke leading the Dogs in assists with 12.

The Huskies are off for a few weeks before heading to UBC January 6th and 7th to take on the Thunderbirds. Live stream is available on Canadawest.tv.
