WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL: LAKERS TAME LIONS FOR THEIR THIRD STRAIGHT WIN

Box Score It was a perfect homecoming for the Nipissing Lakers women’s volleyball team.

After two road wins and a bye week, the Lakers were finally hitting the court at the RJ Surtees Athletic Centre Friday night, hosting the York Lions.

In a competitive match, the Lakers started strong, finished strong and came away with a 3-1 victory to improve to 3-0 on the young season.

In the opening set, Nipissing got off to a quick and lead 10-7 early on thanks to some strong play at the net.

They expanded the lead to 16-10 at the technical timeout and continued control the set.

Late, Nipissing was able to hold on to a seven point lead before putting the set away and finish things off 25-17.

Another strong start had Nipissing up 7-2 early in the set, but this time, York battled back and took a 12-10 lead just ahead of the technical timeout.

The teams traded points, with the Lions holding a slight one-point lead, 16-15.

Despite being down 23-22 towards the end of the second set, the Lakers fought back, scoring the next three straight points to come away with a 25-23 victory.

In the third set, with the Lakers leading the match 2-0, it was York who came out quickly and took control of the set.

Nipissing trailed 19-10 late and fell by a final of 25-12, but remained up 2-1 in the match.

Looking to clinch the match, the Lakers once again started the set off with a good push, grabbing an early 13-10 lead.

They pushed their lead to 16-14 at the break in the fourth and stayed just far enough ahead of York throughout the set.

The Lakers were able seal the win with a 25-22 victory in the fourth set.

Nipissing picked up their third win in as many matches and their first of the season at home.

The Lakers and Lions are back on the court Saturday afternoon to wrap up the weekend.

Saturday’s match is set for 2pm.
