Top-ranked Bears cruise past Dinos in Calgary

CALGARY – The University of Calgary men’s volleyball team fell to the No. 1 University of Alberta Golden Bears, 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-20), Friday night from the Jack Simpson Gym.
The loss puts Calgary at 3-6 in their season thus far, while Alberta moves to 8-1.

The Dinos showed no signs of being intimated by the No. 1 ranked Golden Bears, not only notching the first point of the match but going point-for-point in the early going. However, after an 11-11 tie midway through, the Golden Bears slowly started to get things rolling to eventually take the first set.

Alberta continued their momentum into the second set by holding a lead, but they were tested by the Dinos.

Eventually, the Golden Bears would find their grove back, pulling away from the teeter-totter action and take the second set on a service ace from Cam Kern. Calgary did not go down without a fight in the third set, keeping the difference within three points for most of the set.

In the last few points of the set, the Dinos pushed hard to pressure the Golden Bears with two beautiful kills from Jackson Meier and Lincoln Baines.  However, the Golden Bears would finish the match by notching the last five points to hit 25.

Both teams are back in action tomorrow for a rematch at the Jack Simpson Gym. First serve is set for 7:45 p.m. following the women’s match.
