LANGLEY, British Columbia – Happy New Year. This Week in Sparta sees the second half of the Canada West conference season get going for six teams. Men’s hockey and men’s and women’s basketball are on the road, while women’s hockey and men’s and women’s volleyball are at home.

  • In their last conference games of the first semester TWU defeated Manitoba 80-64, and 66-63 on December 1-2 at home at the LEC.
  • In UBC’s last conference games the Thunderbirds defeated the MacEwan Griffins 75-41, and 88-26, on December 1-2 in Edmonton, Alta.
  • The Spartans are 7-52 lifetime against the Thunderbirds.
  • Last season the Spartans lost 75-64, and 62-57 to the Thunderbirds, snapping TWU’s three-game winning streak against UBC.
  • TWU defeated the TRU WolfPack 88-53 in a non-conference game on December 30 at the LEC.
  • UBC’s two losses were to unbeaten Saskatchewan, 76-63, and 77-62, November 17-18 in Saskatoon, Sask.
  • The Spartans, who are currently 8-0, have never started a CW conference season 9-0. TWU started the 2021-22 season 8-0 before losing to UFV, 70-47.

As official members of U SPORTS, the Spartans currently compete in 13 sports in the Canada West conference, including women’s and men’s soccer, volleyball, basketball, hockey, cross country, and track & field, as well as women’s rugby sevens. TWU also competes as an independent team in men’s rugby, as well as women’s and men’s disc golf. Since TWU entered U SPORTS in 1999, the Spartans have won 13 U SPORTS team championships and 32 Canada West team championships.
