Mustangs fall 3-1 to Windsor

Box Score Windsor, ON – The Mustangs showed periods of strong play but dropped a 3-1 match against the Windsor Lancers on Saturday afternoon.

Western started the opening set with a 6-3 advantage, this was quickly answered when Windsor took 12 of the next 15 points and opened a 15-9 lead. The Mustangs made a late set push fueled by an Ava Ebert kill and Devin Gerth service ace pulling Western back to trail 23-17 but Windsor would round out the set and win it 25-20.

The Mustangs would regroup in between sets and come out strongly in the 2nd set, including a pair of Thea Ishida service ace’s and Western would open up a 9-2 lead early. The mid-way portion of the set saw varying back-and-forth action with Windsor drawing the deficit a little closer later in the set. The Mustangs would hold on and take the set 25-19 and even up the match at 1 set each.

The see-saw action continued in the 3rd set as Windsor took the first four points but was quickly answered by Western with a pair of points of their own to cut the early lead. Western would pull within a point midway through the set a 10-9 but a stretch of 4 straight points forced the Mustangs to call a timeout and ease the pressure from Windsor. While the break would halt the Lancers pressure, it wouldn’t serve as a shift in momentum for Western and Windsor would end up taking the set 25-17 and the 2-1 lead in the match.

Windsor would open a big lead in the 4th set at 13-7 quickly and forced Western to take their second time out of the set after the Lancers went up 15-9. The break would prove to be well used as the Mustangs would take a bit of momentum and cut the Windsor lead down to 16-15 off a pair of Lael Harrison aces which would lead to a 16-16 tie. The remainder of the set would continue to be tight, right down to the end of the set with Windsor taking the set 25-23 along with the match at 3-1.

Western drops both meetings against Windsor on the weekend as they look toward the upcoming playoffs in a couple of weeks’ time.
