Mariners Advance

Friday afternoon the VIU Mariners dethroned the champs and advanced to the PACWEST gold medal match with a four-set victory over the Camosun Chargers.

It was the Chargers that jumped out in front of the Mariners in the first set winning 25-23 and looked to set the tone.  However, that momentum didn’t last long with the Mariners coming right back in the second set to win 25-22 behind the outstanding play of Daniel Mascarenhas and Lucas Torres off the bench.  Mascarenhas plugged up the middle attack of the Chargers and Torres was a man on mission from all parts of the court.

Behind the offensive smarts of Owen Dyck, the Mariners won the third and four sets 25-16 and 25-19 respectively to capture the match.  Dyck started to feed Torres who held the hot hand and finished with a match high 13 kills and collected six aces.  Mascarenhas added 12 kills and was named the Player of the Match.

The Chargers didn’t have an answer for Torres and started to tire from the onslaught of the Mariners offence. Jake Bolton played well and tried to keep them in the game with 10 kills and Edvard Adolfsen added 11.  Setter Ben Linsley ran a good offence and was named the Player of the Match.

The Mariners will now play for PACWEST gold on Saturday at 8:00pm while the Chargers will go for bronze at 3:00pm.
