Badgers continue winning ways against York

The Brock Badgers women’s volleyball team came away with another victory as they secured a 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 28-26, 25-19) win over the York Lions on Sunday, Nov. 5 in Toronto. 

The Badgers picked up their first point of the set on a kill from veteran outside hitter Meera Sayal on an assist from fellow graduate student Sara Rohr

Senior outside hitter Sadie Dick provided Brock’s first ace of the match early in the first set, making the score 4-3 for the Badgers.

Markham product Isabella Samadzadeh recorded an ace immediately after being subbed in, with the serve being too difficult for the Lions to return. Impressively, following a timeout, Samadzadeh made it back-to-back aces for the Badgers.

Rohr helped Brock improve its lead to 16-9 after winning an important battle at the net. 

An ace from Sayal ended the set, with the Badgers taking it 25-15. 

Brock had five aces in the first and 12 kills to the Lions’ nine.

York came out strong in the second set which caused the Badgers to respond. Outside hitter Emily Foest stepped up to give the Badgers a point on a kill after a strong rally, clawing into the Lions’ lead. 

Following a timeout, the Badgers were able to cut down a five-point deficit into a lead, after a York attack error made it 13-12 Brock.

After the Lions’ took the lead again, Brock was able to keep the scoreline close but it was York who closed out the second set, winning it 25-23.

A massive block from Dick gave Brock a 5-2 lead in the third set. 

Middle Emma Baruchelli, a first-year International student from Italy, picked up her first kill of the day in the third set, giving the Badgers a two-point lead over York. 

Sayal did well to find the line on a powerful strike that resulted in a kill, increasing Brock’s lead in the set. 

After York erased Brock’s commanding lead, the set headed to extras with the Badgers winning it 28-26 on a Baruchelli kill.

The Badgers recorded four blocks in the third set.

After going down early in the fourth set, Brock scored four consecutive points, including an ace from Sayal.

A strong set of kills from Dick increased Brock’s lead in the fourth set, causing York to call a timeout.

Despite trying to mount a comeback, the Lions could not stop the Badgers as a kill from Sayal iced the set for the Badgers 25-19, giving Brock their second win on the season. 

In the fourth set, the Badgers had 16 kills on 35 attack attempts. 

Sayal led the way for Brock in kills with 12 on the day. Toronto native Aleiah Torres had an outstanding 18 digs for the Badgers while Rohr picked up 40 assists in the game. 

Up next, the Brock Badgers (2-0) return to Bob Davis Gymnasium for their home opener against the TMU Bold (2-0) on Friday, Nov. 10 at 6 p.m.
