Women’s Volleyball defeats Bold for first time in 11 years

On Sunday afternoon at the new Toldo Lancer Centre, the Lancer women’s volleyball took on the TMU Bold for the first time since January 11, 2020. The blue and gold went on to secure a 3-1 win (17-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-22) to improve to 3-2 on the season.

The victory is also the Lancers first over TMU (formerly Ryerson) since January 8, 2011.

STATS
The team was led by Yaila Sealy with 10 kills and 13 digs, while Megan Gahima also had an impressive performance with 8 kills and 2 blocks, for 11 points each.

GAME FLOW
The first set got off to a slow start for the blue and gold as the Bold took an early lead. TMU provided some steady serves and service aces as the Lancers had a tough time trying to recover from attacking errors. The Bold took the first set 25-17.

In the second set, Windsor looked for some better scoring opportunities to take control of the court. As the Lancers faced some difficulty early in the set, Windsor came from behind and took the lead at 8-7. Aryn Markett was subbed into the game as head coach Lucas Hodgson hoped to change the intensity. The plan worked as Markett had an impressive kill on her first play in the game. Later in the set, Sealy was able to seal the deal with a kill off the hands of TMU’s blockers to take the set 25-22.

To start the third set, the Lancers continued to hold strong against the TMU offense. Picking up the first two points, Raiya Millin displayed a strong swing as the Bold struggled to make up ground. The blue and gold narrowed in on all ends of the court and held control throughout the set. Jordyn Brearley also played a significant role as she came up from the centre to shut down the TMU Bold with a huge kill into an open spot on the court to give the Lancers a 11-8 lead. Breaking the Lancer block, a timeout was called to keep the pressure on TMU. Markett finished off the set with a kill down the line. The Bold remained within striking distance, yet the Lancers could not be stopped and closed out a close set 25-22 and led 2-1 heading into the fourth.

Windsor carried their momentum into set four and Millin showed consistency throughout the set as she held an aggressive approach with kills the Bold could not recover from. Although the set was close, the Lancers kept their foot on the gas to secure the set 25-22 and the game 3-1.

UP NEXT
The Lancer head to St. Catharine’s next weekend for a doubleheader against the Brock Badgers. Game time for game one is set for 6:00pm on Friday, November 25th.
