Warriors split marathon matches with Badgers and Blues

The women’s volleyball team continued their strong start to the season, splitting their weekend action with Brock and Toronto going the distance in both matches. 

On Friday night Waterloo took to Carl Totzke Court in front of over 900 fans to battle the Brock Badgers dropping an incredibly tight 5-setter. Set scores were 24-26, 25-27, 25-21, 25-22, 13-15.

Waterloo got an incredible performance from Sarah Glynn (Fredericton, NB) who collected 28 points on 25 kills, one ace and four blocks. She also had a strong defensive performance with 11 digs. Jennifer Zhu (Oakville, ON/) was also in double digits in points with 11.5 on 10 kills and two blocks. Avery Kelly (Calgary AB/) rounded out Waterloo’s attack with nine kills while playing stellar defence with 22 digs. Alex Sinik (Calgary, AB/) was also strong on the defensive side with 14 digs while Claire Gagne (Cambridge, ON/) earned 46 assists in a strong losing effort.

On Saturday night, the Warriors went into Toronto, an always tough place to win and came away with a thrilling 5-set win over the Varsity Blues. Waterloo dropped the first set 25-21 before winning the next two 25-23 and 25-16. The Blues bounced back to win the fourth set, 25-19 before the Warriors cleaned up their play and took the fifth and deciding set, 15-11. 

It was Glynn again with a dominating performance putting down 22 more kills while adding two aces, two blocks and 12 digs in the win. Kelly added eight more kills while Abbey Neufeld (Battleford, SK/) also had a strong match with eight kills of her own.  At the net, Grace Crooks (Ottawa, ON/) had three blocks. Defensively, Sinik was all over the place making key digs all match long. She would finish with a game high 23 digs in the win while Gagne added 10 digs and 47 more assists.

The Warriors are back on the road again this upcoming weekend as they battle the Gryphons in Guelph on Friday night before a rematch with the Varsity Blues on Saturday, once again in Toronto.
