Sherbrooke squad shutdown succinctly by volleyball Martlets

MONTREAL – Victoria Iannotti of St. Laurent, Que., scored a game-high 17.5 points, leading McGill to a hard-fought 3-1 victory over a feisty Sherbrooke squad in women’s volleyball at Love Competition Hall, Sunday. The set scores were 25-22, 25-15, 24-26 and 25-23.

The result improved McGill’s second-place record to 6-2, while Sherbrooke dropped to 4-6.

The Martlets had a 50-46 edge in kills and a 13-10 margin in service aces. Both sides registered 10 stuff blocks. The largest difference between the two side was McGill’s superior hitting percentage, where the Martlets connected on 25 per cent of their kill attempts, compared to a tepid 13.4 success rate by the Vert & Or.

Iannotti, a 5-foot-9 power-hitter, registered her points on the strength of 15 kills, one service ace and three assisted blocks over four sets. The 23-year-old software engineering senior also contributed five digs on defence.

She was one of three Martlets to reach double digits in scoring, along with Meaghan Smith, who registered a career-best 14 points, and fellow co-captain Charlene Robitaille (13).

Smith, a six-foot middle blocker from Vancouver, B.C., collected five service aces, four kills, a pair of stuff blocks and six assisted blocks. The cognitive science senior also added one dig.

Robitaille, a fifth-year middle blocker from St. Jean, Que., contributed 11 kills, one ace, two assisted blocks and five digs.

Veteran Audrey Trottier, the starting setter from Longueuil, Que., was credited with 36 assists, in addition to three aces, a pair of assisted blocks and five digs.

Three members of the Vert & Or also scored in double figures, led by Madeleine Ouellet-Lu (16), Gabrielle Minier (12.5) and Catherine Lavigne (12.5).

McGill will close out the fall semester on Friday, Dec. 2 when fifth-place Ottawa (2-7) pays a visit to Love Competition Hall for a 6:30 p.m. tip-off. Sherbrooke is done for the semester and will return to action on Jan. 13 in ottawa.
