RECAP: Gee-Gees put together winning weekend at home and on the road

The Gee-Gees women’s volleyball hosted UQAC on Friday at Montpetit Hall. The night ended with a 3-0 victory in favour of the Gee-Gees. On Sunday the team headed to UQTR to pick up a 3-1 win after a hard-fought four sets.

Against UQAC, the Gee-Gees started off with a 12-0 lead to open the first set. This set the tone as the Inuk only managed to score 10 points, giving the Gee-Gees a 25-10 win.

In the second set, UQAC was first on the scoreboard, but Ottawa quickly evened it up and pulled ahead to win 25-21.

The final set went the distance, with UQAC forcing Ottawa to earn the win. The Gee-Gees ultimately took the set 26-24 for the 3-0 win, using the depth of their bench.

Ottawa head coach Lionel Woods praised younger players on the team for stepping up and finding the win in the final set. Rookie setter, Harper Shaefer, logged 20 assists in the effort and set up Janae McKay for the game winning kill.

“I can’t make those situations up in practice. You look for some opportunities where you can give them trust and an opportunity to grow,” Woods said. “They didn’t just play it and carry on, they found a way to win in the end and I think that is valuable down the road.”

Another rookie on the squad, Gee-Gees outside hitter, Camryn Giddens contributed seven digs and a service ace in the win.

“Every single player in the gym works so hard so when I get the chance to get in, I’m extremely excited,” Giddens said.

On the road against UQTR, Ottawa struggled in the opening set, giving it up 25-19. The second set was close, but the Gee-Gees put it away 25-23 to tie up the score.

The third set was close, but the Gee-Gees strung together a pair of kills to close out the set 25-22. The fourth and final set started off with the Gee-Gees first on the scoreboard. With 6 service aces and a long run of impressive plays, Ottawa finished with a dominant 25-16 win to take the match 25-16.

Audrey Odigie led the way for the Gee-Gees this weekend with 29 kills followed by Janae McKay with 14 and Denae Bristow logging 10.

Next on the schedule for the Gee-Gees is a big matchup with Sherbrooke on Jan. 28 at Montpetit Hall. Tickets for the 1 p.m. game are available at https://teams.geegees.ca/tickets
