The result gave the two teams a match each in the season-opening weekend series with the Wesmen preparing for the Manitoba Bisons next week.

Darian Picklyk was one shy of a career-high for digs with 18 in leading a Wesmen team that dug up 67 attacks on the night. Eric Dornez had 11 and Daniel Thiessen and Nigel Nielsen had 10 each.

Thiessen had a career-high 28 kills on 60 swings (.383) and also added two blocks. Nielsen chipped in with 14 kills.

The Wesmen hit .288 for the night to Brandon’s .264.

Winnipeg also used three setters on the night. Second-year Ben Traa earned his first career start before giving way to Matt Klysh, who was later relieved by Regina transfer Mike Corrigan, who made his Wesmen conference debut.

Middle Philip Lauter had 14 kills, three aces, and 2.5 blocks.

The Wesmen host the Bisons on Thursday at 7:45 p.m. and then play at U of M on Saturday (2:45 p.m.)
