McGill’s Clara Poiré named U SPORTS volleyball player of the week

MONTREAL – Clara Poiré of the McGill Martlets and Isaiah Olfert of the Winnipeg Wesmen, are the U SPORTS volleyball players of the week for the period ending Oct. 29, 2023.

Poiré, a 6-foot-2, right-side hitter from Blainville, Que., played a key role in guiding McGill to victories over Ottawa (3-0) and Montreal (3-2) last weekend. Over her eight sets played during the weekend, the 24-year-old senior scored 27.5 points, on the strength of 20 kills, one service ace and 6.5 stuff blocks. She added 18 digs and one assist on defence. A product of College Lionel-Groulx, Poiré enrolled at McGill in 2019 and completed an undergraduate degree in kinesiology last year and has returned to work on a graduate certificate in accounting.

Olfert, a fourth-year outside hitter, led the Wesmen to a sweep of the defending national champions from Trinity Western, snapping a nine-match losing streak to the Spartans, A kinesiology senior, he had 28 kills on 49 Attempts with just five errors while adding three aces, nine digs and two assisted blocks.

Student-athletes from McGill have now won six weekly awards, including five at the RSEQ level. That group is composed of swimmers Hazem Issa (Oct. 24) and Elizabeth Ling (Oct. 11), rugby players Martin Laval (Sept. 12) and Lauren Minns (Sept. 5), in addition to football’s Brandon Ciccarello (Sept. 5).
