A Home-And-Home Battle of The ‘Unbeaten’ Gets Underway Friday as UBC Hosts TWU

VANCOUVER – By the end of Friday night there will only be one remaining unbeaten team in Canada West women’s volleyball. Doug Reimer‘s UBC Thunderbirds (8-0) put their unbeaten streak on the line when they clash with their Highway 1 rivals from Trinity Western (8-0) at 6:00 pm Friday.

The ‘Birds arrived at 8-0 thanks to an impressive pair of victories last weekend at home against the Alberta Pandas. Lucy Borowski paced the blue and gold with 36 points and defensively the ‘Birds were full marks surrendering just one set victory to Alberta.

“We’re showing some pretty good resilience and we are more settled in a lot of areas this year, compared to a year ago,” said head coach Doug Reimer. “We’re a hard team to prepare for because we have a solid offense that’s based on good passing and we’re bringing a lot of different looks, especially from the outside that can create a lot of offense.”

The Trinity Western Spartans will serve as the toughest challenge to date for UBC. Heading into the home-and-home weekend, Trinity Western sits as the #1 ranked team in all of U SPORTS while UBC trails by two spots at #3.

“They’re an experienced team across the board, and they provide a lot of challenges with what they can bring offensively,” added Reimer. “To this point of the season, they’ve been the most consistent team offensively, so for us we have to bring great play in all areas, and find that balance of aggressiveness and composure.”

It’s not often that UBC heads into a weekend with an underdog mentality, but Reimer acknowledged that it’s as good a time as any to go head-to-head with the 2022 national champions. “We’ve been strong rivals for a long time, and anytime we play Trinity it’s always a great battle. We’ve shown that we’re a good team, and they’ve shown why they’re the number one team in the country, so we’re going to give it our best effort.” UBC will be looking for their first victory against TWU since November 27th, 2021.
