CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women’s volleyball team dropped their second weekend matchup in as many days against the University of Winnipeg Wesmen, 3-0, in the Jack Simpson Gym Saturday.
The Dinos – now 9-7 – couldn’t match the defensive prowess of the Winnipeg team (11-6), falling 25-21, 25-18, 25-16.
Sheridan Coninx led the way for the Dinos, registering eight kills and three solo blocks, and right behind her was teammate Alice Nikolaychuk with seven kills of her own.
Emma Parker racked up 13 kills for the Wesmen while Winnipeg teammate Portia Switzer was all over the court making offensive plays happen with an impressive 28 assists.
It looked like the Dinos were set for a comeback after a late timeout in the first set, clawing back four consecutive points to make the score 20-23 starting with a big kill by Coninx and followed by two service aces by Stella Rains, but it wasn’t enough as the Wesmen were able to remain focused to take the opening frame 25-21.
After Winnipeg claimed the second 25-18, the Dinos momentum continued to wane through the third. The Wesmen opened up with a 5-0 lead over Calgary and never looked back, cruising past the home team 25-16 to win in three.
Calgary will be on the road next weekend taking on Brandon University and the Wesmen will head to Regina to take on the Cougars.
