The York University Lions women’s volleyball team continued their winning run on Friday evening, as they hosted the Trent Excalibur and came away with their fourth straight win. The 3-0 win was their second straight set win in a row on home court.
The win improves their record to 7-1, as they successfully protect first place in the OUA East division, as they near the playoffs with four games remaining.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- York came out swinging as they took an 8-3 lead early in the first set to force a Trent timeout. The lions continue to find unprotected spaces in the opposition’s end to win the set by 25-14.
- The second set also went in York’s favour, as the Lions picked up five points with Chiara Da Silva behind the service line to go up 6-1 early in the set. With the strong lead, the Lions take advantage and go on to take the second set 25-14.
- The Lions didn’t let up in the third and took a commanding 10-0 lead. However, the Excalibur did not back down, as they made a valiant effort to claw their way back into the match, trimming the lead down to 12-14.
- Nonetheless, the Lions fought their way past the Excalibur to win the set 25-16.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- The Lions outscored the Excalibur 39-18 in the number of kills in the match.
- Leaders of the game from the Lions’ side included Elina Zvigelsky with nine kills and a team-high 12.5 points, Da Silva with an outstanding 28 assists, three service aces and four digs. Followed by Alisa Trubyuk with six kills, seven digs and three block assists.
- The Excalibur were led by Natalie Fournier with six kills, five digs and six points, as well as Genna Saunders also with six points and five kills.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Lions will look to keep their winning streak going against the undefeated Toronto Varsity Blues on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 5:30 pm at Tait McKenzie Centre.
