WVB: Saskatchewan Sweep of the Brandon Bobcats

BRANDON, MB – After winning in four sets over the Brandon Bobcats on Friday night, the Saskatchewan Huskies were after the weekend sweep. Saturday night saw a focused women’s volleyball team hit the court, grabbing another 3-1 win over the Bobcats (25-14, 20-25, 25-19, 25-21).
 
The Huskies took a quick lead in the first set, winning 10 of the first 14 points to take a 10-4 lead. Syree Tucker would have three kills for the Bobcats to bring the score to 12-7 but they were no match for the Huskies who would go on a five-point streak to end the first set with a 25-14 win. 
 
The second set was dominated early by Brandon, who would jump to a quick 11-3 lead. The Bobcats continued to thrive in the set heading to a 23-15 lead. Saskatchewan bounced back thanks to some incredible serving from Devyn Ethier who would serve up three aces, bringing the Huskies within three at 23-20. The Bobcats would end the set with two kills and the 25-20 win. 
 
The Huskies adjusted and cruised to a 19-10 lead in the third set. The Bobcats would answer with six straight points to bring the set to 19-16 Huskies. The set went back and forth until a four-point run would end the set and give Saskatchewan the 25-19 win. 
 
It was a slow start to the fourth set for Saskatchewan, as Brandon’s Tucker hit the service line and the Bobcats nabbed six straight points to jump ahead 7-2. Points went back and forth for most of the set, with the Huskies taking six of seven points midway through to lead 17-15. Saskatchewan’s offence would crank up the heat with kills from Rosetta Cyr, Jolene Sibley, and Mandi Fraser to increase their lead 24-21. Averie Allard would nab a kill to end the set 25-21 for the Huskies. 
 
KEY PERFORMANCES
Rosetta Cyr had an incredible night for the Huskies, leading the team in kills (12) and aces (3). Averie Allard added 25 assists on the night. For the Bobcats, Carly Thomson led the team in assists (34) and aces (3), with Keely Anderson leading in kills (15). 
 
STANDINGS
The Huskies currently sit in tenth place in the Canada West standings, just outside the top eight. With Canada West playoffs starting on February 24, Saskatchewan is looking to finish out the season strong and grab a playoff spot. 
 
NEXT UP 
Saskatchewan is back at the PAC on February 10 & 11 to take on the Calgary Dinos who are seventh in the Canada West standings. Friday night’s match up will start at 6:00 PM, with Saturday’s game starting at 3:00 PM.
