Women’s Volleyball Week 9

VIU Mariners @ COTR Avalanche – Friday January 26, 6:00pm MST | WATCH HERE

It’s a match up with teams that bookend the standings as the top seeded Mariners visit the last place Avalanche on Friday and Saturday.

The Mariners have won seven straight dating back to November 11th and are 2-0 since the calendar turned to 2024.   They will meet an Avalanche team that they swept during the first weekend of the season, winning in five and four sets respectively.

They currently hold a six-point led on second place and will look to extend their lead this weekend against a team that has struggled all season.  Emma Schill leads their offence with 96 kills and is the reigning Athlete of the Week.

The Avalanche have won just once in their last eight matches with that victory coming last weekend when they hosted the Camosun Chargers.  They need an upset win to keep any playoff dreams alive as they come into the weekend six points back of the final post season berth.

On Saturday morning the teams will play for the final time this season at 11:00am MST | WATCH HERE

Capilano Blues @ Camosun Chargers – Friday January 26, 6:00pm| WATCH HERE

A possible playoff preview will see the Chargers welcome the Blues this weekend for a pair of matches.

It’s the second meeting of the season between these two schools after the Blues hosted and swept the Chargers in early November in three and five sets respectively.

The Blues opened the second semester two weeks ago and dropped both matches at CBC, then had a bye last weekend to regroup.  They hit the road again on Friday and Saturday looking for their first victory away from Capilano, they are currently 0-4 on the road.  Their offence has been led by Nnya Mbaoma all season with her 152 kills.

Meanwhile the Chargers open up six in a row at home after splitting last weekend at the College of the Rockies. After dropping the first match in three sets, they rallied the next night to earn a sweep of their own.  Last weekend was their first matches of the second semester.  They are currently tied with the Douglas Royals for second place in the standings, six points back of the first place Mariners.

Offensively they are led by Erica Bolink and her 189 kills this season.  She somehow continues to get it done despite the opposition keying on her each match.

The schools will meet again on Saturday at 1:00pm | WATCH HERE

CBC Bearcats @ Douglas Royals – Friday January 26, 6:00pm | WATCH HERE

This is an important weekend for both teams with four points separating them in the standings.

These two teams met during the opening weekend the season and split it with both schools each winning in four sets.  Since the calendar turned the Royals are 2-2 and are sitting in a playoff spot that the Bearcas desperately want.  They are back at home where they have enjoyed a 5-1 record and are looking to end January with a couple of wins.   Lauren Bowman has led their offence with 158 kills and Anna von Krosigk has added 129 so far this season.  They will need big performances out of these two against the Bearcats.

Last weekend the Bearcats had a bye, but they swept the Capilano Blues the weekend before that so have two wins in a row. They hit the road where they have a .500 record at 2-2 and need a positive outcome this weekend to climb in the standings.  Kiana Wiebe leads their offence with 117 kills and will need to play well if they want to have success at Douglas.

They meet again on Saturday at 1:00pm for the final time this year | WATCH HERE
