WolfPack bounce back to defeat Wesmen

KAMLOOPS – The Thompson Rivers WolfPack women’s volleyball team put together a complete performance en route to defeating the Winnipen Wesmen 3-1 (25-16, 20-25, 25-16, 25-21) Saturday night inside the TCC.

The result was a big one for the squad that had played well in their last two matches but were unable to put together enough of a consistent effort to pull out a win.

“Confidence is a funky thing, sometimes the harder you try, the worse things get so you just have to stay relaxed,” said WolfPack head coach Behlul Yavasgel. “As a young group I think they are doing well in practice and the last couple games we were trying too hard a little bit, but today we were more relaxed and I think we play better that way.”

Captain Abby Spratt directed the WolfPack offence with 40 assists in the game. Brooklyn Olfert, Erin Mutch and Ema Palkovicova once again supplied the offensive firepower with 16, 13 and 11 kills apiece while Faith Christensen added six kills and five blocks.

“Abby was an anchor for us. She made the correct decisions in critical times, as a captain and a setter she was a leader tonight,” said Yavasgel. “Without the play of our middles Faith and Hayley McNaught tonight we wouldn’t have been able to win, they worked so hard and they were the reason that our hitters like Brooklyn and Erin were so successful.”

After the teams traded the opening two sets TRU took control of the match in the third.

The WolfPack hit .214 per cent as team in the frame while limiting the Wesmen to just 16 points en route to the 25-16 victory.

From there TRU was able to close out the game in a tight fourth set. The WolfPack jumped out to 19-12 lead on a kill from Spratt and Palkovicova put the finishing touches on the night with a big kill to end the match.

The WolfPack are now 3-3 on the year and will next be in action November 18 when they travel to Kelowna to take on the UBC Okanagan Heat.

“I think is this league that we could beat anybody, and anybody could beat us,” said Yavasgel. “We have to go into every game with that mindset, play scrappy defence and be aggressive. “
