Warriors top Lancers in back to back games at the PAC to open season

The Waterloo Women’s team had a strong debut against the visiting Lancers.

The women’s volleyball program finally got their regular season underway this past weekend and it was worth the wait as the black and gold dropped just one set on route to two straight wins over the visiting Windsor Lancers on Carl Totzke Court.

In the first match on Friday night in front of nearly 600 fans, it was academic for the Warriors who swept aside the Lancers with set scores of 25-15, 25-16, 25-19. Waterloo put down 46 kills compared to just 32 for Windsor with third year Sarah Glynn (Fredricton, NB/) leading the way with 14 kills while chipping in with nine digs and one service ace.

Serena Otshudi (Hamilton, ON/) had herself an outstanding first match in her senior year putting down seven kills while adding five blocks and four aces.

Karen Fan (Oakville, ON/) and Mackenzie Vallee (Waterdown, ON/) rounded out Waterloo’s attack with 10 and seven kills respectively while Katrine Eistrat (Toronto, ON/) finished with a game high 35 assists. Libero Jenna Gravina (Burlington, ON/) led all players on the defensive side with 10 digs.

On Saturday, Waterloo continued again came out firing against the Lancers winning the first two sets 25-20, 25-23 before the Lancers took the third set 13-25 but Waterloo made the proper adjustments in the fourth to capture the set 25-20 and the match 3-1.

It was Glynn who was again unstoppable with 14 kills in the match while adding four service aces and nine digs. Grace Crooks (Ottawa, ON/) and Fan were also key in Waterloo’s attack each with nine kills while Gravina equaled her Friday total with 10 more digs and Eistrat led the Warriors attack with a solid 34 assists. At the net, Otshudi was a wall again with a game high five blocks.

Waterloo will be back in action next Friday again on Carl Totzke Court again Western at 6pm before heading to London on Saturday to face the ‘Stangs for their first road game of the season at 4pm.
