Warriors top Gaels in pair of home games, turn attention to post-season

Women’s volleyball took on the Queen’s Gaels in back-to-back home games to wrap up their regular season and earned two big wins to head into the post-season on a high note. Having already clinched a home playoff berth, Waterloo wanted to earn some momentum heading into the playoffs and did so with the pair of wins over a very competitive Queen’s squad.

On Friday night at the PAC, Waterloo dropped a close first set 25-27 but bounced back with three straight set victories (25-22, 25-19, 25-20) to defeat the Gaels by a 3-1 score. Leading the charge was Sarah Glynn (Fredericton, NB) who had 22 points on 18 kills, three aces and two blocks. She also added 14 digs. Jennifer Zhu (Oakville, ON/) also had a stellar game with 15.5 points on 14 kills, one ace and one block. Lauren Hebert (Burlington, ON/) and Avery Kelly (Calgary AB/) were also both in double digits in points with 13 and 10 respectively. Defensively Nora Kotun (Sherwood Park, AB/) earned an impressive 18 digs while Claire Gagne (Cambridge, ON/) added to her incredible assist total with another 48 helpers.

On Saturday as part of Senior Day, Waterloo had to grind out a 5-set win over the Gaels winning the fifth set 15-8. Once again, Glynn paced the Warrior attack with another 19.5 points while also leading the defence with 13 digs. Karen Fan (Oakville, ON/) was clutch on the attack as well with 10 kills while chipping in with nine digs. At the net, Waterloo got a strong performance by middles Grace Crooks (Ottawa, ON/) and Laren Hebert who combined for nine blocks in the win. Gagne was on point again with another 34 assists.

Waterloo will now shift their focus to the post-season when they take to Carl Totzke Court next Saturday at 4pm. Their opponent is still to be determined based on matches going on today. Tickets for the match can be purchased here.
