Warriors sweep Wolves to stay unbeaten

If nothing else, an early-season road trip to Thunder Bay is always a great opportunity for a team to bond and lay the cultural foundation for the long year ahead. But a pair of dominant victories doesn’t hurt, either.

The Waterloo Warriors women’s volleyball team kept their hot start going, as they swept a weekend series with the Lakehead Thunderwolves to move to 4-0 on the season. On Friday night, the Warriors claimed a four-set victory (25-19, 25-19, 25-27, 25-21) against the Wolves, before rattling off a straight-sets win (25-15, 25-16, 25-22) on Saturday afternoon.

In the first match of the weekend doubleheader, and without the services of star outside hitter Sarah Glynn (Fredericton, NB), the Warriors used a balanced attack to claim a win. Jennifer Zhu (Oakville, ON/) led the team with 12 kills, while Abbey Neufeld (Battleford, SK/) added 11. Meanwhile, Lauren Hebert (Burlington, ON/) put away 10 kills on just 11 attacks, for an .818 kill percentage.

The Warriors got up two sets to none, before the Thunderwolves edged out a 27-25 decision in the third set. But the Warriors were able to put the match away in the fourth, and move to 3-0 on the season. Veteran setter Claire Gagne (Cambridge, ON/) finished with 29 assists, while Sydney Degrauuw added four blocks.

With Glynn back in the lineup less than 24 hours later, the Warriors cruised to a dominating three-set decision. Playing just two of the three sets, Glynn continued her torrid start to the season with a match-high 17 kills on a .619 kill percentage, pushing her OUA-leading average to 5.67 kills per set. Neufeld added 10 more kills, and Gagne ended with 35 assists to extend Waterloo’s unbeaten streak.

The Warriors will now turn their attention to their home-opening weekend, as they’ll be back at the PAC to host the Brock Badgers on Friday, November 18 at 6pm.
