The Warriors men’s volleyball team and visiting Windsor Lancers went toe-to-toe in two epic matches at the PAC this weekend with both teams each coming away with one victory.
On Friday night, Waterloo won a thrilling five set match which included two set victories beyond 25 points. Windsor took the first set 21-25 before the Warriors bounced back winning the next two 32-30 and 26-24. Windsor claimed the fourth set 18-25 before the Warriors bounced back and put together a strong fifth set, 15-8 to win the match 3-2. As indicated by the score, very little separated the two combatants with Waterloo putting down a total of 63 kills on 139 attempts while Windsor had 62 kills on 141 attempts.
Leading the way for the Warriors was rookie rightside Liam MacArthur (Cambridge, ON) with an astounding 21 kills. The rook also added three blocks and three digs in the win. Leftside Noel Campfens (Toronto, ON/) was next best with 16 kills while Bennett Newell (Brussels, ON/) put down nine and added the same number of digs. At the net Siraj Khanna (Surrey, BC/) was a wall with five blocks. Setting up the attack was veteran Colm Guyn (Lethbridge, AB/) who collected 48 assists.
On Saturday night, it looked as if the two were headed for another five setter but Windsor had other ideas winning the first set 25-23 and closing out the match in four winning the fourth in another tight set, 27-25.
Waterloo was again led by MacArthur who put down 17 kills while Newell put away seven and Campfens and Fehin Awobodu (Oakville, ON/) each had six. Guyn collected 41 assists in a strong losing effort.
The Warriors will be back on home court Friday night against Western at 8pm before travelling to London to face the Mustangs on the road at 6pm.
