QUICKLY
The University of Regina’s women’s volleyball team had a chance to wrap up what would have been its biggest win of the season on Friday night, but UBC Okanagan ended up pulling out a five-set victory over the Cougars at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UBC Okanagan rolled to a 25-18 win in the opening set, but it was a different match from there. The Cougars replied with a 25-21 victory in the second set, then followed that up with a 25-20 win in the third set.
- The Cougars got off to a quick start in the fourth set, scoring the first four points of the set and at one point leading UBCO 14-7. The Heat used both of their timeouts in the early going and bounced back with a 7-1 run, and finally got their first lead of the set after four straight points gave them a 21-20 advantage. UBCO never trailed after that and while the Cougars evaded three Heat set points, they couldn’t escape the fourth and a Regina hitting error sent the match to a deciding set.
- The back-and-forth fifth set saw a total of seven lead changes. The Cougars gave themselves a chance to win the match after going up 15-14 but UBCO survived that match point with a Korey Jenkins kill, then clinched the win by collecting the next two points as well.
