TMU drop road finale to Brock in straight-sets

The nationally-ranked Brock Badgers took down the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women’s volleyball squad in straight sets earlier today, securing their second-straight victory over the Bold by a 25-19 , 25-23 , 25-17 score.

In a similar stance to yesterday’s road defeat, the Bold continued to come up with ways to maximize their games on both ends of the court and instill a fearful sentiment within their opposition.

Much of the theme would be wiped out completely in Saturday’s third and final set however, with TMU unable to stop the bleeding from the Badgers’ lethal attack, dropping the deciding frame by eight points.

Scarlett Gingera led the charge in the losing effort, posting nine kills and five digs while outside hitter Lauren Veltman extended her league-leading kill total to 67. Veltman led the Bold in reception attempts with 20 in the straight-set loss.

TMU fell behind the Badgers in the early stages of the opening set and at one point, trailed the nationally-ranked side by seven points – a deficit they failed to witness in last night’s 3-1 loss to Brock.

Despite the early hole, Veltman helped muster a comeback with her opening two kills of the afternoon to bring the Bold within striking distance of the Badgers. Sarah Zonneveld teamed up with Gingera five times throughout the set to help Veltman and the Bold shorten the gap – a feat that would go unaccomplished with the home side securing victory on an extended rally to swoop the momentum.

Brock’s Sadie Dick played a crucial role in doubling the Badgers’ lead in the game and pushing TMU to the brink with her five-kill performance in the middle frame. The Badgers found success in forcing lengthy rallies upon the Bold defenders, a critical component of the match that the visitor’s struggled with as they worked to claw their way back to level terms.

Gingera continued to shine throughout the set, but like the rest of her teammates, would be unable to come out victorious in the afternoon’s closest stanza.

Up a pair of sets on the Bold, the Badgers began to pin their foot against the gas pedal with no means of slowing down. Emily Foest personified this feat for the home side, securing a trio of kills and a service ace to help mount a lead the Bold would fail to sniff at, and take the victory unscathed.

TMU will look to get back to their winning ways in a weekend affair with the RMC Paladins. The Bold will be playing both matches on home soil, the first of which coming Friday at 6:00 p.m.

The Bold were winners of two straight last weekend at the MAC. They will look to replicate that result on Friday.
