THIS WEEK IN SPARTA

LANGLEY, British Columbia – After one of the busiest weeks in Sparta, this week is one of the slowest, with only the men’s and women’s volleyball teams are competing this weekend. The two teams are off to Calgary to face the Calgary Dinos on Friday, February 16, and Saturday, February 17 in the final conference games of the season with playoff positioning and hosting opportunities on the line.

NOTABLE

  • No. 4 TWU is currently at 18-4 in Canada West, while MacEwan is 8-14. STANDINGS
  • Last week the Spartans swept the MacEwan Griffins, winning 3-0 on Friday night, and 3-1 on Saturday night at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C.
  • Last week Calgary was swept, 3-1 and 3-0, by the Winnipeg Wesmen on the road in Winnipeg, Man.
  • The Spartans are 36-37 lifetime against the Dinos.
  • The last time the Spartans lost to the Dinos in conference play was 3-2, February 3, 2018, in Calgary, Alta.
  • TWU has currently won nine straight conference and play-off matches against Calgary.
  • Second-year outside Maryn Boldon (Okotoks, Alta.) was named Canada West Female Volleyball Player of the Week after her performance last weekend against MacEwan.

As official members of U SPORTS, the Spartans currently compete in 13 sports in the Canada West conference, including women’s and men’s soccer, volleyball, basketball, hockey, cross country, and track & field, as well as women’s rugby sevens. TWU also competes as an independent team in men’s rugby, as well as women’s and men’s disc golf. Since TWU entered U SPORTS in 1999, the Spartans have won 13 U SPORTS team championships and 32 Canada West team championships.
