LANGLEY, British Columbia – This Week in Sparta is one of the busiest of the year for the Spartans. ­ Men’s hockey, men’s and women’s volleyball, and men’s and women’s disc golf are at home, while men’s and women’s track and field are in Seattle, WA, women’s rugby is at a seven’s tournament in Vancouver, B.C., women’s hockey is in Edmonton, Alta., men’s and women’s basketball are in Abbotsford, B.C., and women’s soccer in Calgary, Alta.

  • TWU is currently 3-22-1 in Canada West, while Alberta is 17-7-2.
  • This weekend concludes the 2023-24 season for the Spartans
  • Last Friday and Saturday the Spartans lost twice to the Regina Cougars in Regina, losing 8-0, and 4-1. Then on Monday and Tuesday, the Spartans split with the No. 9 Saskatchewan Huskies, losing 4-1 on Monday, and winning 2-1 SO (2-1), on Tuesday.
  • Last week the Golden Bears split with the UBC Thunderbirds losing 4-2, and winning 3-2 in overtime at home in Edmonton, Alta.
  • The Spartans are 0-6 lifetime against the Golden Bears.
  • In their last series with Alberta on January 5 and 6, the Spartans lost to the Bears 7-2, and 5-1 on the road in Edmonton, Alta.

  • Last week MacEwan was swept 3-0 on both nights by the Alberta Pandas at home in Edmonton, Alta.

  • The Spartans are led by Canada West shot-blocking leader third-year centre Connor Platz (Langley, B.C.), who broke the single-season record last weekend against UNBC. Platz currently had 63 blocks on the season, 3.5 per/game. Platz is also third in CW averaging 10 rebounds per game.
  • Platz is also the Spartans Male Athlete of the Week after recording a triple-double and a double-double in the two Spartan wins.

As official members of U SPORTS, the Spartans currently compete in 13 sports in the Canada West conference, including women’s and men’s soccer, volleyball, basketball, hockey, cross country, and track & field, as well as women’s rugby sevens. TWU also competes as an independent team in men’s rugby, as well as women’s and men’s disc golf. Since TWU entered U SPORTS in 1999, the Spartans have won 13 U SPORTS team championships and 32 Canada West team championships.
