SPARTAN MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK | ANSELM REIN

LANGLEY, British Columbia– Trinity Western’s Anselm Rein (Erfurt, Germany) is the Spartan Male Athlete of the Week after posting 9.8 assists per set, 0.9 aces per set, and .6 blocks per set to lead the Spartans back to the Canada West final for the 12 straight season after a 2-1 series win over the No. 9 Winnipeg Wesmen.
 
On Friday night the second-year setter finished the evening with a career-best eight service aces and 12 points, with the Spartans hitting at .222 in a 3-1 win over the Wesmen. The eight service aces were one off of the Canada West post-season record of nine, which was set by former Spartan Josh Howatson ’07, in a 3-1 win over the Wesmen on February 18, 2005, in the Canada West Quarter Final.
 
On Friday night Rein finished with 33 set assists and one ace in the Spartans 3-0 loss to the Wesmen.
 
On Saturday night the biology student responded in a big way to lead the Spartans to a 3-0 sweep of the Wesmen and a berth in the Canada West championship. TWU hit at a series-best .356, with Rein finishing the match with 32 set assists.
 
TWU will now travel to Edmonton, Alta. to take on the Alberta Golden Bears for the Canada West championship on Friday, March 8 at 7 p.m. (MT). Both teams will then travel to Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont. for the U SPORTS championship March 15-17.

As official members of U SPORTS, the Spartans currently compete in 13 sports in the Canada West conference, including women’s and men’s soccer, volleyball, basketball, hockey, cross country and track & field, as well as women’s rugby sevens. TWU also competes as an independent team in men’s rugby and women’s and men’s disc golf. Since TWU entered U SPORTS in 1999, the Spartans have won 14 U SPORTS team championships and 33 Canada West team championships.
