MONTREAL – Veterans Charlene Robitailleand Clara Poireeach reached double digits in scoring as McGill cruised to a 3-0 sweep over visiting UQTR in the RSEQ women’s volleyball regular season opener at Love Competition Hall, Friday. The set scores were 25-16, 25-6 and 30-28.
It extended McGill’s all-time record to 13-0 lifetime against the Patriotes since they first crossed paths in 2005.
Rachèle Béliveau, in her 33rd year as head coach at McGill, was honoured in a pre-game ceremony for recently becoming the third bench boss in Canadian university women’s volleyball history to reach the 700 win plateau. After the game, her tally now stands at 702-559-2 overall.
McGill was without the services of all-star power-hitter Victoria Iannottii.
Robitaille, a senior middle blocker from St. Jean, Que., collected 14 points, on the strength of 13 kills and two assisted stuff blocks. She added eight digs and one assist on defence.
Poire, a 6-foot-2 right-side hitter from Blainville, Que., registered 13.5 points, primarily on the strength of 13 kills. The fifth-year kinesiology senior added an assisted block and seven digs.
Teammate Rachel Leducof Montreal, contributed nine points, with six kills, two aces, one block, in addition to seven digs and one assist.
The only member of the Patriotes to reach double figures was Laurence Flamand, who had 12.5 points.
The Martlets had the statistical edge in most significant categories, including kills (39-27), stuff blocks (7-3), digs (52-39) and assists (37-26). UQTR had the upper-hand in service aces, with a 9-4 margin.
UQTR (0-1) will host Laval (1-0) on Sunday.
McGill (1-0) has a day off to prepare for a road game at Sherbrooke (0-1) on Sunday (Oct. 15) in a 1 p.m. matinee. The Vert & Or were swept 3-0 at Laval in their opener on Friday.
