Resilient Badgers record fourth straight win to open the season

The Brock Badgers men’s volleyball team despite being shorthanded pulled off a 3-1 win (19-25, 25-19, 28-26, 25-21) over the TMU Bold on Saturday, Nov. 11 at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.

Kersey Robinson lead the Badgers in kills with 14 while third-year setter Nolan Shapcott recorded a game-high 42 assists.  Brock’s dig leader was libero Justin Rulli-Levere with 12.

The TMU Bold found themselves ahead early until Jacob Ferland’s opening kill for the Badgers helped turn the tide.

Kills from Devin Cooney kept the Badgers in the set after the TMU Bold pulled ahead once again.

Despite the Badgers showing a strong fight, the visitors took the first set 25-19.

Cooney earned Brock’s first block of the day early in the second set, making it 2-1.

Ottawa’s Ferland decided to join the block party by recording one of his own, giving the Badgers a four-point advantage.

After forcing TMU into taking a timeout, the Badgers continued to the pressure on the opposition as a massive kill from Robinson made the scoreline 17-11 for Brock.

The Badgers dealing with multiple injuries allowed reserve Philip Kovac to make his debut. The first-year middle blocker picked up two kills in the second set, giving Brock a significant advantage.

A kill from Robinson ended the second set, with the Badgers taking it 25-19.

Brock had four blocks in the second set as well as a hitting percentage of .357.

The Bold took a 4-0 lead in the first set before the Badgers had an 8-4 run of their own, with kills from Sauli Lianga and Robinson.

Four kills from Ferland in the third set helped Brock battle back and forth with TMU.

The set headed to extras, and it was Lianga who came with the clutch kill to give Brock the 28-26 set win.

The Badgers and Bold kept each other on their toes in the fourth set as both sides traded points.

An important kill from Ferland put Brock firmly in the driver’s seat, making the scoreline 20-15 for the Badgers.

It was Kovac who iced the game with his fourth kill in the set, as the Badgers claimed victory over the TMU Bold winning 25-21 in the fourth.

Up next, the Brock Badgers make their way to Kingston as they face off against the No. 6 Queen’s Gaels on Saturday, Nov. 18, at 8 p.m. You can catch the action on OUA.tv.
