Weekend Story
KAMLOOPS – A rare midday game highlights the penultimate weekend at home for a Thompson Rivers WolfPack men’s volleyball team that is eyeing an upset against the conference-leading Alberta Golden Bears.
Hosting Alberta at Noon on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday, the WolfPack have a strong hold on seventh place in the conference.
TRU enters the weekend fresh off a weekend sweep over the Fraser Valley Cascades. Sam Flowerday racked up 25 kills on Friday night as the WolfPack outlasted Fraser Valley in a five-set thriller. Things were easier for the ‘Pack on Saturday in a 3-1 victory during which Thundersky Walkingbear was key with 11 kills and three service aces.
With six games left to go in the regular season, the WolfPack hold a record of 8-8 which places them seventh in the conference. They are just one game behind the sixth-place Brandon Bobcats and are ahead of the eighth place Calgary Dinos (8-10) on win percentage.
Alberta (17-1) comes to Kamloops riding the longest winning streak in the conference at 17 games and are currently ranked as the No. 1 team in the nation.
The Golden Bears took care of the MacEwan Griffins last weekend by scores of 3-1 and 3-0.
By The Numbers
.410: WolfPack middle Corbin Ockerman sits second in the conference in hitting percentage.
1303: The battle of the setters will be one to watch. Alberta’s Cam Kern (695) and TRU’s Sam Elgert (608) are two of just three setters in the conference to break the 600 assist mark so far this season.
.347: Alberta boasts the most efficient offence in the league, finishing on .347 per cent of their kills as a team.
