Players Bench Athletes of the Week: October 16-22

Female Athlete of the Week

In the opening weekend of the season, Mount Royal’s women’s volleyball team was on the road to face UBC. Despite a valiant effort on the court the Cougars fell in both matches 3-0.

Women’s volleyball first-year Faith Obasi is this week’s Players Bench Female Athlete of the Week. In last weekend’s season opener, and her first U SPORTS game, the middle player was a leader on the court with three kills, one ace and two blocks. On Saturday Obasi collected one ace and three blocks. A local Calgarian, Obasi is enrolled in Mount Royal’s University Entrance Option program.

Male Athlete of the Week

In an exciting end to regular season play last weekend, the Mount Royal men’s soccer team bested crosstown rival University of Calgary 2-0 to secure first place in the Canada West Prairie Division. The Cougars will host playoff games this weekend on Saturday and Sunday at Mount Royal Stadium Field. They are set to start their playoff run with a semifinal matchup with Thompson Rivers University at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Leading his team on the field last weekend, the Players Bench Male Athlete of the Week is Aidan Dumoulin. The first-year keeper was a stand out on the field, with five key saves to earn the clean sheet for the Cougars. This victory puts Dumoulin in the record books as the new Canada West regular season shutout record holder with a total of 10. A local Calgarian, Dumoulin is enrolled in Mount Royal’s Open Studies program.
