OUA announces updated winter championship schedule

The OUA is back and updated schedules for all of the sports championships have been announced.

Burlington, Ont. – Following the recent announcement regarding the return to training and competition for the province’s university student-athletes, Ontario University Athletics (OUA) is pleased to announce the updated schedule for the conference’s winter semester championships.

Said Gord Grace, OUA President & CEO, “We are thrilled to be back playing in the OUA and look forward to providing a quality experience for our student-athletes that culminates in our winter championships”.

Among the events to kick off the highly anticipated banner season slate on February 25 to 27 will be the 2022 Nordic Skiing Championships, hosted by the Laurentian Voyageurs, which remains unchanged from the original schedule. This foray into championship play, however, will also come with some adjustments, specifically in the form of a newly structured OUA Curling Championship. The typically combined men’s and women’s event has been divided into two separate offerings, the first of which will be the Women’s Curling Championship (February 25 to 27), hosted by the Waterloo Warriors.

As the calendar changes to March, OUA championship action continues to ramp up across the winter sport landscape. The Women’s Fencing Championship will kick off the festivities therein, with the RMC Paladins welcoming the conference’s contingent to Kingston from March 5 to 6.

The following weekend sees the defending champion Toronto Varsity Blues make a splash on the schedule when they host the OUA Swimming Championships from March 10 to 12. Alongside the prowess in the pool are the 2022 Squash Championships, to be hosted by the Brock Badgers at the White Oaks Resort & Spa from March 11 to 13.

A quartet of conference championships headline the penultimate weekend in March. The York Lions will host the lone multi-day event of the weekend – the OUA Track & Field Championships – from March 18 to 19, and while all eyes will be on the track for the Friday, it will be a finale-filled Saturday that follows. Three league-sport championships wrap up their conference seasons on March 19, as the Quigley Cup (women’s volleyball), Forsyth Cup (men’s volleyball), and McCaw Cup (women’s hockey) will all be on the line during the day’s championship blitz.

The remaining OUA league sports will wrap up conference play a week later, with the Critelli Cup (women’s basketball), Wilson Cup (men’s basketball), and Queen’s Cup (men’s hockey) all being awarded on March 26.

Further details on all league sport playoff formats leading into their respective championships will be announced in the coming days.

Championship dates still to be finalized, meanwhile, include the 2022 OUA Wrestling Championships, Badminton Championship, Men’s Curling Championship, Men’s Fencing Championship, and Figure Skating Championship, all of which will all be announced at a later date.
