Mustangs sweep weekend series against Lancers with 3-0 win

Windsor, ON – The Mustangs hit the road Sunday afternoon to finish off their weekend series against the Lancers, ultimately winning 3-0.

Janelle Albert led the way for the Mustangs with 16 kills and 3 aces, while Jaeya Brach, Lexi Iggulden and Lauren Pastor also put up strong showings.

The two teams kept it close in the beginning, before the Mustangs got out to a 4 point lead at 12-7 by rallying behind Brach’s serve.

The purple and white would continue to build their lead, and some consistent serving from Pastor along with kills from Kate Van Camp and Albert would force a Windsor timeout at 19-11.

After their timeout, the Lancers came out firing taking the next 6 points, putting Western back on their heels now only being ahead by 2. Despite this, the purple and white held on and claimed the first 25-19.

The hosts built an early lead in the second, getting off to a 4-1 start and requiring a response out of Western.

An Albert ace would help to tie it up at 6, but Windsor would build another lead at 11-8 as their momentum continued to grow.

Strong passages of defence and serves would turn things around for the Mustangs however.

A Pastor tip and Albert block would reduce the deficit to 2 at 15-13. Those two again would help to tie it up, with an Albert kill triggering the technical timeout with a 16-15 Western lead.

With set point at 24-21, the teams would have to press pause on the game as the fire alarm sounded and evacuation occurred in an unprecedented situation. Around 30 minutes later and post a second warm-up, play would resume.

Coming back from the outside cold, the Lancers saved three set points making it 24-24. Janelle Albert would reclaim set point for the Mustangs however, and eventually win it for the purple and white with a 26-24 final score.

Making up for lost time, the Mustangs would take the third set with ease.

Western got off to a 4-0 to start in the third, thanks to Pastor’s steady serve yet again. An Albert ace would make the lead 7-1 for the ‘Stangs, continuing her dominant performance as well.

The purple and white doubled up on their opponent at 14-7, and yet again at 22-11, as they continued to punish the Windsor defence.

They would take the third set 25-12 off of a Lancer misplay, ultimately sweeping the weekend series.

The purple and white now improve to 7-4 on the season and have a 0.636 win percentage. The Lancers drop to 1-8 on the season with the loss.

The Mustangs will play their final game of the regular season on March 3rd against Guelph on the road. The game starts at 6pm and can be viewed live on OUA.tv
